Space

Garden designers traditionally work on paper, with pens and splashes of colour. The really good ones see the world in three dimensions. They plan out the invisible spaces that everything else hangs off.

These intangible shapes are the metaphysical glue that holds everything together; they’re the invisible framework that allows us to make the magic happen. Think of it like your skeleton. You may not be able to see it, but without it, everything would be floppy and useless.

Our gardens take people on journeys. They weave spells and sweep people along on their own personal fairy tales (I know, I know; we said we’d go deep – just stick with us). Imagine you’re tippy-toeing along a dew-kissed pathway, edged with ornamental grasses and wildflowers a-bobbing in the summer breeze. A small clearing of coppiced hazel invites you to enter and whoosh! A Victorian walled garden whisks you back in time.

Next thing you know, you’re waltzing under a chandelier, as a string quartet… You get the picture, but the journey you go on is totally up to you. Space. Moments. Journeys. We could also ramble on about balance, rhythm, and unity, but that would take ages, and we’ve got gardens to get on with.

UNL Studios designs gardens — very special gardens.

We’re based in Bristol, but we like to get around a bit. Bath, Somerset, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and even sometimes as far as that there London.

We are a small studio specializing in designing and delivering bespoke landscapes and gardens across the South of the UK.

Basically, if you want something marvelous with three Ms, then you’ve found yourself in the right place. If you don’t, well we’re not for everybody to be honest.

Garden design, in essence, means organising outdoor space.

But nature is a tricky mistress. She’s unpredictable and often rather stubborn. And therein lies the first step on the path to gardening enlightenment; admitting that, as garden designers, we have to work with, not against, nature. Some gardens need just a little tickle of the brush; some need spade-loads of welly-wrapped tough love. Gardens small and large never stop growing. They are always a work in progress. Despite this, In our Bristol studio we’ve developed three garden design principles that help us tease the best out of any outdoor space. Part wand-waving, part time-travelling, part scratching our heads and getting elbow-deep in muck, here’s:
